Semicolons

Explanation

Semicolons are used in place of a coordinating conjunction and a comma to divide two separate independent clauses. Semicolons indicate that the reader should do more than pause, as a comma indicates, but not completely stop, as a period indicates. Frequently, writers do not use semicolons but instead break the sentence into two separate sentences.
