Chapter 8: Check-In with the Semicolon

Activity A. Building English Power: Commas and Semicolons

  1. For hotel reservations, you can call your travel agent; or you can dial our toll-free number.

  2. Hotels in major cities offer complimentary features in their weekend packages; for example, continental breakfast, health club, and free parking.

  3. Popular vacation resort areas include San Juan, Puerto Rico; Cancun, Mexico; and Hilton Head, South Carolina.

  4. A great way to visit new areas is to stay at bed-and-breakfast inns; they are informal and friendly.

  5. The conference room has been reserved for our June meeting; however, plans for the luncheon are incomplete.

  6. The convention activities will be held in Scottsdale, Arizona; in addition, local tours will be offered.

  7. For your information, a layout of the Conference Center is attached; and a brochure about our facilities is enclosed.

  8. Registration for the conference will take place in the hotel lobby; and the exhibit area, which is rather large, will be held on the mezzanine floor.

  9. We, unfortunately, cannot accommodate your group during the week of May 15; but our facilities are available the following week.

  10. The members of the Executive Board, after visiting several hotels, met to discuss future convention sites; but they were unable to reach a decision.

  11. Reservations must be guaranteed with a credit card; otherwise, rooms are held only until 4 p.m.

  12. Our hotel chain combines quality accommodations, fine service, and good value; moreover, these hotels are highly rated by travel agents.

  13. A block of 20 rooms has been held for your company conference; you are reminded of our 48-hour cancellation policy.

  14. We offer a special weekend rate; however, reservations must be made two weeks in advance.

  15. Our hotels are located at the following airports: London, England; Milan, Italy; and Tokyo, Japan.
