Postscript

Ruth Warner's policy statement was partially successful. Those who bothered to read it tended to abide by it, but the textbook issue was so hot that Ruth and the others in the school district's administration found they had to initiate some meetings and public forums to put themselves at the center of the dispute, all the better to put the problem into some kind of controlled deliberation.

Bob Hanley's manual was a great success. His new administrative assistant, Joe, spent a day with it while he was still training, and then used it as a reference until he was skilled in all aspects of the job. Joe realized, in fact, that he should update the manual to add another duty to the job description: maintain the Administrative Assistant's Handbook. He did maintain it faithfully; and when Joe decided to leave to become a law student, Bob turned the training over to Jeannine. The switch from Joe to Jeannine was the smoothest staff transition that Bob ever had.
