Sample Operations Procedure

In general, operations procedures tend to have fewer decision areas than administrative procedures do. This is the tendency partly because the procedures will not be so specific that they provide lessons in standard technical operations for the user. They will focus instead on a sequence of actions that constitutes an operational whole. Thus, for example, a technician would not find a procedure on how to change the oil in the company car, because this is a standard activity that has little degree of specialization attached to it. On the other hand, the technician would find procedures on how to work a specialized piece of equipment, like a one-of-a-kind nuclear waste forklift, or procedures on how to respond to a nuclear spill on the premises. All the principles that the technician had learned about cleaning up would be qualified by site-specific rules and parameters. The procedure in Figure 9.3 is a simple operations procedure that conveys the flavor of such procedures.
