Conclusions

With thoughtful visual design, writers can positively influence their readers' acceptance and use of any document. But writers don't have to have a computer on their desks to accomplish this goal. All they need is a clear idea of what makes writing easier and more enjoyable to read; they need ultimately to make the writing useful. Intelligent notions of formatting and the use of graphics can accomplish that goal.

When two documents present information of equal quality and usefulness, the one with the more professional appearance and more effective use of design will often be viewed as the better of the two. However, writers must remember that although a good design can make a good document better, it cannot make a bad document good.
