Creativity Versus Convention in Document Design

A balance between creativity and convention is important to discuss at this point. Technical and professional documents must compete with others for the attention of their readers. As a result, writers may be tempted to embellish their writing visually for purely competitive reasons. But by so doing, they may go beyond the bounds of convention and forget that the primary purposes of technical and professional writing are to inform, perhaps to persuade, but above all, to be useful to readers. New and creative document designs can be productive pieces of written communication as long as they continue to serve the rhetorical needs that the documents require.
