Elements of Document Design

Writers, when designing documents, look at individual pages differently from the way most readers look at them. They actively consider aspects of the text, margins, and graphics that most readers see only passively. To writers and designers, the page has three key elements:

  1. White space— the portion of the page not written or drawn on

  2. Text— written portion of the document, consisting of readings and bulk text

  3. Graphics— all items that stand outside the text proper, such as graphs, illustrations, tables, and the like
