Chapter 12. Solving Problems Through Doc... > The Importance of Presentation

The Importance of Presentation

Presentation is a key element in many areas of the professional arena. In situations in which competition is very strong, the way a product is presented may determine its eventual success or failure. Presentation helps persuade consumers that the product does what it is supposed to do, and does it well. In the restaurant business, for example, taste is not the only consideration for a successful meal. A high priority is placed on how the meal looks on the plate. The same is true for the clothing and the automobile industries, or any other industry that depends to a large degree on aesthetics to sell its products.

However, the power of presentation is not simply in the attempt to beautify an item for the sell alone. In Kevin's case, for instance, the design of his newsletter—how information is presented on the page—would also affect how well it informs its readers. Kevin's experience both as writer and as reader showed him that he learned much more, and learned it more easily, from documents that had been carefully designed and laid out than from those that were simply dense blocks of words.
