Conclusions

It is entirely appropriate to end this long discussion on research with some final words about ethics. We don't mean to imply that we actually have the final words, but rather to suggest that we have come to understand the tremendous importance of responsible, ethical research in all sectors of the professional world. Without good research, no matter the field, no matter the magnitude of the effort, the value of the process of solving problems is seriously compromised. As professionals, we are certainly struck with the centrality of our collective, collaborative efforts to make research meaningful in order to solve problems, but at times we perhaps need reminders that these efforts are only as good as the individual convictions and endeavors upon which they are built. This goal requires “constant vigilance and a deep-rooted sense of ethical behavior” on the part of every professional (Sproull: 14). How else can the professional world be more than the sum of its parts?
