Exercises

  1. Write a cover letter and résumé to apply for the position described in Figure 11.9. You should not make up any facts for these application materials; instead, you should work with your real experience, highlighting your strenghs and correlating them with the terms of the job description.

    Figure 11.9. Position description

  2. Your class should form evaluation groups to review the applications for the liaison position. Then you should all make enough copies of your cover letter and résumé to distribute to the evaluation groups. These groups will then review the candidates for the position on the basis of how well their cover letters and résumés reflect the principles discussed in this chapter. The position description is multidisciplinary, so no one student has any better qualifications than any other. Your instructor will be interested mainly in how you correlate your own qualifications with the demands of the position.

Each group should choose three top candidates. Then the group should write a memo to the instructor explaining why group members chose the three candidates. Make a recommendation that they be brought in for an interview.

Assignments

  1. Contact the placement office at your school for brochures and pamphlets or any other pertinent advice available on the job search. Do you see any discrepancies between the principles in this chapter and the advice that your placement office has for you? What rationale lies behind the discrepancy? Discuss this in your class.
