Postscript

On May 17, John called Rick Stewart at SeaScience. Since Stewart was out of town until May 25, John had no choice but to wait on his contact. He preferred to talk to Stewart before he talked to the personnel manager, who might toss John's application because he did not go through the orthodox channels. In the meantime, John heard from OCEANIQUE on May 20, where he was short-listed for the managerial position. Replies to his other seven letters were polite but unencouraging.

On May 25, John did talk to Stewart, but because Stewart called him. Stewart was pleased to get John's letter, enthusiastic about John's interest in the company, and encouraging about actually establishing a position for John. Since this position would be an additional one, John would have to be willing to wait for several weeks for the bureaucracy to go into gear. John was willing; he began his wait.
