Exercises

  1. Write a brief paragraph summarizing the patterns of error that your instructor has marked in your work. You will need to go back through your papers to find these patterns. Patterns of error certainly extend beyond our discussion here of sentence structure problems. You may find that your patterns include chronic difficulties like subject-verb agreement, noun-pronoun agreement, faulty diction, undeveloped introductions, or undeveloped conclusions. Include embedded prose and the other topics discussed in this appendix as part of your analysis.

  2. Correct the errors in the following sentences. If a sentence is correct, mark it at the end with a C.

    1. The validation phase has gone smoothly so far, the results are as predicted.

    2. Our recommendations, based on study of your numbers over the past 2 years.

    3. Without actually going into the details of the program.

    4. Sinking the second pilot hole proved the most difficult because the slurry from the first threatened to swamp the stabilizers.

    5. The tests require rework, not one of them validated our predictions.

    6. When Sales decides to run another contest like this one, we suggest that the work of the rest of the staff be considered more carefully because the past few weeks have brought continued disruption to our operation from the start we were worried about this possibility.

    7. Continuing the project simply is not feasible now, no one knows exactly when we should resume it, but we should stop it immediately.
