Exercises

  1. Find the embedded points in the following passage; then rewrite the passage to make the points explicit.

I have some experience fixing motors of all kinds. These are DC motors and motor-generators. I also have worked in customer service for 15 years. Customer service means taking complaints and suggestions. Then, there were 5 years when I did some accounting and some sales. The sales were mostly trailer hitches and special features. My school experience was also in motors and dynamics, with the usual math and humanities courses that might interest a company like yours.

  2. Review the interview report you wrote for your instructor in Chapter 3 for any sign of embedding. Revise the report to make your essential points explicit.

  3. Rewrite a piece of writing that you find, or one supplied by your instructor, that suffers from embedded prose. Bring important ideas, conclusions, or implied recommendations to prominent structural positions so that readers won't miss them. Then write a short analysis of your rewrite, suggesting why you think the original was written the way it was and how you think your rewrite improves it.
