Problems With Embedded Prose

Identifying Embedded Prose

Embedding is both a common and a very serious problem of technical and professional writing. That the prose is embedded means that the writer's main point is buried within the words of the text. There are a number of ways to bury points: write them in the middle of a long paragraph; separate them with commas in a subordinate part of a sentence; omit them from the introduction to a report; write a descriptive executive summary that lists topics instead of a conclusive one that states conclusions, results, and recommendations.
