CASE STUDY: Susan James's Office

ITE Industries, Inc. ▪ Richmond, California

It may have been the lack of a lunch hour, or maybe the lousy pastrami sandwich she had delivered from the corner deli, but Susan James felt particularly out of sorts as she stared at her computer, trying to complete the outline of her latest quarterly report. As head of Purchasing, Susan had been under fire recently. The Engineering Department had been pointing to her and her staff as the main reason for missing several deadlines and not meeting some of the objectives that had been set for Engineering. This was not an uncommon position to be in, however. Purchasing fit the description of the perfect scapegoat in a production facility: as an administrative function, as a support activity rather than a production activity, Purchasing often had to make up everyone else's lost schedules.
