Consulting has become one of the most popular options available to the technology professional. As the economy fluctuates and companies look to mitigate long-term costs (read full-time employees), opportunities will abound for astute professionals to sell their talent on an as-needed basis.

This chapter offers some simple, yet effective advice on how to make the transition to consultant/contractor. In addition, this chapter identifies and explains some resources to assist the consultant.


In this chapter, I speak of the consultant in the framework of the independent, self-employed individual. Staff consultants, those who are employed by technology companies, are no less consultants, and some of this information certainly applies to them, too. However, a good portion of this content is related to those issues that are specific to the independent.
