Part II: Mind Your Manners > Master Business Entertaining

Chapter 12. Master Business Entertaining

More than 50% of all business deals are concluded over a meal. Potential employees can be interviewed, customer relationships can be built, and teamwork can be deepened—all during a meal. Meals can be formal or informal, planned or impromptu. They can make or break your reputation as a professional. Below are some guidelines for business entertaining:

Breakfast meetings usually begin between 6 A.M. and 7 A.M. and run between 30 and 90 minutes. They are good for networking and sales leads.

Lunch meetings are generally between 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. and run one to three hours. Lunch is a favorite meal for conducting business and getting to know customers better.

Afternoon tea starts around 2 P.M. and ends around 5 P.M. It is a good alternative to meeting for drinks.

Dinner meetings start around 5 P.M. and can go as late as 11 P.M. They tend to be the most formal business meal and are often attended by spouses and partners.
