Part III: Act Like a Professional > Have Professional Relationships

Chapter 20. Have Professional Relationships

Treat others as equals. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and courtesy.

Take every opportunity to meet people. Arrive a little early at meetings and social gatherings and greet as many people as you can.

Pay attention to other people when they are speaking. Don’t let your attention wander. Ask questions that show you are listening.

Send a thank-you note or e-mail when someone does something special for you.

Admit your mistakes and apologize. Don’t blame others.

Don’t gossip. People will distrust you.

Don’t be overly critical of the organization or co-workers.

Don’t backbite. What you say always comes back to bite you.

Keep your word. If you say you will do something, do it. If the situation changes and you can’t do it, let people know. Keep in mind, the more you back out of things, the less credible your word becomes, so only agree to do what you know you can do.

Concentrate on solutions, not problems. People prefer to be around problem solvers, not whiners.

Respect other cultures. Diversity makes life and work interesting. Show others how to respect your culture.

Don’t join in on negative remarks. Say, “I am very uncomfortable with statements like that and find them offensive. Let’s not go there.”
