Part I: Preparation > Writing Your Cover Letter

Chapter 4. Writing Your Cover Letter

The cover letter is a crucial part of the employment process. It is the first document an employer sees. Yet it often gets less careful thought and attention than it deserves, and a poorly written letter will get your résumé filed in the “round file” without further consideration. Why? Because the employer considers sentence structure, spelling, grammar, and overall presentation of material as a reflection of the applicant. Misspelled words or sentences that are nonsensical might be a symptom of someone with poor thought processes, who is careless, or who believes it is unnecessary to produce quality work. None of that is acceptable to the employer and should not be acceptable to anyone who wishes to make a good first impression during a job search.

Proof your work like your job depends on it. It does!
