Chapter 22. Staying Flexible

Managers have long claimed that “people naturally resist change.” Nonsense! People resist change only if they see no gain from it or see some sort of loss or inconvenience from it. People embrace change that benefits them. Life is full of changes—some show gains, others loss.

Regardless, change usually involves stress. This can range from “good stress” (eustress) such as winning a game, to distress, such as being downsized out of a job. If stress in any aspect of life becomes too intense, lasts too long, or is repeated too often, it can cause physical damage. Thus significant adverse change may well generate resistance.
