During the last decade or so, the accelerating pace of operations, the intensity of competition, and the rapid change in technology has led many organizations to decree that career development is a personal and individual matter.

This doesn’t mean that organizations won’t provide training, assistance and opportunities related to career management. But today’s organizations define their corporate goals and objectives and expect employees to develop themselves in ways that support those goals. This approach means that the employer is no longer responsible for each person’s development and/or advancement. In order to remain nimble and competitive, today’s businesses must depend on employees who will take responsibility for upgrading their skills and preparing for their future. Mentees in particular are expected to be proactive in building their career.
