Partnering

One dictionary definition of partner is: “a relationship, frequently between two people, in which each has equal status and a certain independence, but also implicit or formal obligations to the other.” An increasing number of organizations are abandoning the historical “top down” perception of mentoring. They have found a sense of equality to be the basis for developing more mature, adult-to-adult, productive relationships. This allows mentees to be defined by the needs they have at a given time and the mentors by their abilities to assist in meeting those needs.

Exercise

Identify five problems you perceive that might arise in a “mentoring partnership.” Think about issues that might be caused by difference in age, education, gender, experience and so forth.
