Chapter 54. Mentees as Organizational Learning Links

Mentees, whether involved in a formal program, an informal relationship with a mentor, or only occasional and sporadic mentoring, develop trust and even caring for those who have guided them. Organizations that treat mentoring as a way of life can capitalize on those relationships.

In the many-layered machine-age organization, conflict between management and labor was assumed. Therefore, in many companies and agencies workers were expected to “park their brains at the factory gate, do what they were told and keep their mouths shut”—hardly an environment to gain from employee know-how. Workers were also isolated from one another, and chatting among themselves was often punished.
