“I” Versus “You” Messages

There is another, more powerful way to address a person’s negative behavior that carries a low risk of damaging the relationship and is effective in gaining mentor change. It is called an “I” message.

The purpose of the “I” message is to focus on yourself rather than to place blame on the other person.
