Preface

Preface

This book is designed to complement my book Mentoring: A Practical Guide, also published by Crisp Publications, Inc. While Mentoring focuses on mastering the knowledge, skills, and practices of successful mentors, this book offers exercises, information, and self-study activities for those who would like to be mentored— “mentees.”

The mentoring relationship is most effective when mentees understand that they are involved in a process which they can, and should, influence. Making the Most of Being Mentored lays a solid foundation for building this awareness and the skills that will enable mentees to achieve the maximum benefit from this valuable opportunity. The book also deals with practical aspects of mentoring, such as assessing what the mentee is able and willing to invest in the relationship and the challenges of various mentoring situations. But most importantly, this book confronts the common assumption that what the mentor does or says is the most important part of the mentor/mentee interaction. Actually, the opposite is true. The value of the mentoring partnership is determined by what the mentee does with what the mentor provides.
