Chapter 7. A New Perspective

For most people, knowledge and know-how have always been very scarce, precious and hard to acquire until quite recently. Hiding or hoarding knowledge was common and was often the foundation of one’s position, advantage and even the respect of the community.

Knowledge of a trade, of rites and rituals, or of an art or skills were not only rare, but usually took a long time to acquire. Consequently, the idea that the mentor was older, wiser or more knowledgeable became ingrained.
