Mentees often want to know, “What do I do when I’ve outgrown my mentor?”

The obvious answer is to end the relationship. However, there is often a putdown indicated by the word outgrown. It might imply that the mentor has not grown according to the mentee’s standards. In reality, the mentor has helped the mentee achieve his or her objectives. Therefore, a more fair response is, “I’ve gotten what I need and it is time for me to meet new challenges. Thanks for your help!”
