Chapter 47. Cultural Diversity: Gaining a New Perspective

Many people wish to work with a mentor they like, one who is friendly and with whom they can develop a rapport. This comfort zone approach may be very pleasant and productive, yet such a relationship may have the opposite effect and cut a mentee off from an optimum experience.

Some organizations have mentors and mentees take the Myers-Briggs Personality Preference Indicator (or similar tool) so they can match people with a compatible personality type. There can be a surprising loss if people are too comfortable working together as mentor and mentee. Compatibility between mentor and mentee might be helpful in some cases, but it all depends on what the mentee wants to learn or achieve.
