Chapter 46. Diversity Issues in Mentoring

There have always been those who felt it was very important to give the newcomers a helping hand. Immigrants often lacked familiarity with the customs, rules and culture of their new homeland. A person who knew the ropes took the “greenhorns” (as they were often called) and taught them how to get along in this unfamiliar country.

As our workforce becomes more diverse, there is a growing need for mentors and a need to help newcomers adapt to the workplace as quickly as possible. But that is only part of the story. Mentees can learn several skills that will strengthen their ability to obtain, retain, and use more effectively the help their mentors offer.
