Case #3: Absenteeism

After a wonderful scuba-diving trip over the weekend, Deirdre woke up Monday morning with a high temperature and feeling miserable. It was only her third week on the new job (which she loves), but she knew she had to call in sick so adjustments could be made and others could pick up the slack. Deirdre also called in sick Tuesday and Wednesday. Sensing she might be creating a problem for herself if she missed any more days, she went to work Thursday and struggled through until the weekend.

When she reports to work the next Monday (almost fully recovered), everyone, including her supervisor, is friendly and sympathetic. So much so, that she relaxes and talks about all the fun she had on her scuba trip and neglects to thank others for picking up the slack. Although nothing is said, Deirdre begins to notice some distancing between her and her coworkers. They seem less eager to help her. Her supervisor appears more demanding.
