Case #4: Choice

On Monday morning after two weeks on the job, Joyce was invited into the office of her supervisor, Ms. Crane. Tense about the purpose of the meeting, Joyce was relieved when Ms. Crane paid her a sincere compliment and told her that the employee Joyce was hired to replace was returning from leave sooner than expected. She told Joyce not to worry because two other supervisors had requested her services. Best of all, Joyce can have her choice between the two assignments.

Department A is supervised by Mr. Chung, a long-term employee. Department A has the reputation of promoting more employees into better jobs than any other department. Mr. Chung is considered an outstanding teacher. On the other hand, he is highly authoritarian. In fact, he runs such a tight ship that his employee turnover is higher than that of any other supervisor in the company.
