Case #1: Rescue

Jamie felt confident and pleased after the two-day orientation program for new employees. However, she was not prepared for the sophistication, skill level, and fast tempo found in the department to which she was assigned. By noon of her first real day of work, Jamie viewed herself as underprepared, underskilled, and underdressed. Fortunately, on her way to the company cafeteria one of her new coworkers, Ethel, caught up with her and they had lunch together.

During lunch, Jamie received many tips and suggestions. For example, she learned from Ethel that Mr. Gregg, their manager, was in trouble with his superiors. That Jill, who has a work station next to Jamie, spreads rumors and is not to be trusted. That Mrs. K, the senior programmer, was recently divorced and is working overtime to escape from her personal life. Ethel was so friendly that Jamie began to feel more confident. She was pleased when Ethel suggested they meet after work for a drink. Ethel’s closing remarks were: “Once you get the lay of the land around here you will be able to protect yourself and survive.”
