INSTRUCTIONAL SUGGESTIONS

Sections I–VII of this book can be used in a variety of ways. For example, the material can be the basis for weekly study skills assignments. Also, learning strategies group leaders can apply units to content-specific assignments. Individual tutors will find sections managable, and learning resource centers like the self-paced format for individualized instruction plans. It is also ideal for tutor training programs, and the checklist in APPENDIX II has been used effectively in the Instructional Support Center at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

All basic Study Skills sections contain alternative coaching strategies. These allow the student to practice the application of a particular skill. It is suggested an approach be used which requires students to apply previous skills, rather than teaching isolated units without relating them to the other study elements.

“Learning Ladders” have been included throughout the book to reinforce the idea that learning must be an active process. These were designed to give students an extra learning boost.
