Chapter 19. Do’s (And Don’ts) for Interviewing

Trying to remember all the do’s and don’ts, should’s and shouldn’ts would be impossible. Refer to this list before each interview for quick reminders of the most vital things to remember. They have all been written in the positive DO, so just turn them around and you’ll know the don’ts.

DO research the position, company or field.

DO practice interviews with a friend to ease your nervousness and pinpoint undesirable habits.

DO ask for directions and parking instructions.

DO give yourself ample time for the interview.

DO try to arrange the interview when you won’t have to worry about the time you’re spending.

DO confirm your appointment ahead of time.

DO arrive alone, without bringing a friend or family member with you.

DO arrive early.

DO be prepared with names and addresses of references.

DO prepare your references for receiving a call.

DO take advantage of any and all contacts, including family members.

DO use contacts to supply you with information.

DO understand the different types of interviews so that you’ll know what to expect from each one.

DO have ideas about salary before the meeting.

DO overdress rather than underdress.

DO treat the receptionist or secretary with respect.

DO remember everyone’s names and correct titles.

DO complete the application or any forms given to you.

DO make eye contact.

DO give answers that are concise and relevant.

DO ask questions of the interviewer.

DO allow the interviewer to guide the conversation.

DO tell the truth and exaggerate only if you can back it up.

DO avoid pat and cliché-ridden answers.

DO try to appear selective, even if you’re over-anxious.

DO be prepared to discuss your former employers, even if the experience was negative.

DO be prepared if you’re interviewing for a position where there’s little room for salary negotiation.

DO ask about specific benefits you’re interested in.

DO use benefits as a negotiating tool when possible.

DO mention work experience and extracurricular activities while in college (especially recent graduates).

DO follow up with a thank-you letter.

Most importantly, DO everything you can to appear and be relaxed!
