Chapter 19. Preparing for Your Annual Re... > Areas You’d Like to Improve On

Areas You’d Like to Improve On

To admit your areas of weakness is a strong show of courage and willingness to improve. Ask for help where you need it. Perhaps it is the internal political area, analytical or financial skills, diversity training, follow-up or time management, or process and planning. Take this opportunity to discuss company-sponsored training or adult education classes you might take to strengthen a designated skill set. Your willingness to improve yourself will be impressive. Identify your perceived shortfalls with your management and create a plan to work on these competencies within the next year, possibly asking for reviews on these sectors in six months. You might be surprised to learn that you are harder on yourself than your manager is. Take the win, but continue to strive to be more excellent in the areas in which you need improvement.

To admit your areas of weakness is a strong show of courage and willingness to learn. Letting your manager know you want to grow will put you in place faster than any other action.
