Chapter 25. When Leaving Is the Only Answer

How will you know when it is time to leave your job or even change your career? You will know by the signals that your mind and body give you with regularity. You are unhappy and you don’t see an upturn in the situation, although you have tried everything possible. Leaving your job is one thing, but leaving your career is a seismically more difficult achievement.

Switching jobs is a simple thing to do in good times. It’s even doable in bad times if you’ve been mindful of your consistent delivery of excellent work, kept up with industry contacts, serviced your customers, and continued vitalizing training. Certainly the rule of getting a job while you still have a job might be heeded more than usual now because of the tough job market. In exceptional circumstances, such as the high number of job reductions in the technology sector, you might have to consider a career shift based on your skill sets or freelance in a related area to tide you over or start anew.
