Part III: Planning for Passion and Prosp... > Branding Yourself: The Art of Free A...

Chapter 21. Branding Yourself: The Art of Free Agency

Free agency must be an actual goal in your career today. Economic conditions and technological advances intimidate the workforce as never before. Free agency in this context does not mean becoming a freelancer. It means that although you are loyal and valuable to the organization that you work for, you are also a “get” in your industry. Your goal is to be the one your company wants to keep and other companies want to steal away. You want to become the “wow” that everyone wants to hire. There is no better freedom earned than to know that you have career security based on your consistently excellent work, measurable results, passion, and integrity. Free agency does not mean that job-hopping becomes a goal, only that it is an option if you need or want it. Note that a résumé with too many changes begs questions. Nothing beats loving the place you work and being counted as an important, productive, and contributing member of the A-team.

Your goal is to be the one your company wants to keep and other companies want to steal away. You want to become the “wow” that everyone wants to hire.
