Chapter 9. The Champion

The importance of a champion, or supermentor, to your career cannot be stressed enough. I had a few great bosses with whom I shared a thriving work relationship, and I even learned much from those whose behavior didn’t inspire me. I never had one long-standing champion, though, and I think that made the road to some promotions tougher for me. I switched companies four times over 24 years and I was also a bit reticent when it came to cultivating this type of alliance. If I could change one thing from the past this would be it. It is a serious lesson that I hope you will listen to. If you hope to have a long career in one place or one industry it is not enough to only earn the trust and respect of the people that matter in the company. You must also let high-level management know you beyond the business shell so that a real bonding and comfort zone can develop. Comfort and trust come with time and exposure.

If I could change one thing from the past this would be it.
