Chapter 18. Management by Type > The Charming Monster

The Charming Monster

The charming monster is a close cousin to the one with two faces and has the genetic code of the bully boss, albeit more dormant. The only real difference is that this type of manager doesn’t care what you think about him or her. The charming monster talks about people behind their backs and confronts them to their faces. This person is ultraconfident and aggressive and pushes his or her own personal agenda to the mat. The charming monster will nod to the boss and do what he or she wants to anyway. This type of manager is very good at being exclusive and autocratic, and wears the power suit well. The charming monster is exceedingly competitive, egotistical, and fearless, but here’s the rub: The charming monster can build a loyal constituency. He or she is a winner, even if you don’t always like the way the win is achieved.

If you work for a charming monster, try to pick the time that you address him or her so that you get to work with the charming persona instead of the monster one. If you are going to disagree with the charming monster, you must do it deferentially or the monster might come out. If the charming monster thinks you are a threat, look out, because you might be bullied, gossiped about, or excluded.
