Chapter 20. Keeping Clear on What You Th... > What Are You Getting Into?

What Are You Getting Into?

It is very seductive and satisfying to be on an upward track within your organization. You feel acknowledged, “chosen,” and important. You feel secure in your future and strong on confidence. You must beware and be aware of your personal needs, the needs of the company, and how they fit together. Sometimes ego blinds one to pitfalls that should be avoided in the long run. Sometimes you might move swiftly to embrace the new challenge, excited by the ego-satiating part of “being picked.” It won’t hurt to take a deep breath on the eve of new assignments and ask your prospective new managers and yourself some important questions.

Remember the company’s ultimate goals: productivity, growth, profit, and stock price. Remember that you are a cog in the wheel and you are important as long as you are functional to these ends and you are trustworthy and comfortable to be with. Keep your own personal and professional goals foremost in your mind when you are making crucial decisions about your career. What is in it for you?
