Part II: Excel, Execute, Enjoy! > Become Your Manager’s Go-To Person

Chapter 13. Become Your Manager’s Go-To Person

The clearest way to become a valuable member of a team is to have measurable results and to deliver what your manager needs in the format requested, covering every item succinctly, on time and without problems, on a consistent basis. Consistency is key to trust building and comfort level between you and your manager. I always found great comfort in knowing my go-to people would never let me down. They would push new ideas, suggest better processes, and fill in my blind spots. I would learn from them and they would learn from and enjoy the experience. I loved being my boss’s go-to person. I was able to work on projects outside of my normal scope and I grew as a result. This is an incredible win–win result. Earn your spot as a go-to person; it will make you stronger as a leader, worker, and whole, thinking person.

A good way to deliver complete and breakthrough work is to anticipate the specific tasks involved in the creation of the work and to prepare in advance for each item. Understanding why a goal is the goal is the first step; this helps to stretch your thinking on a subject. Ponder and ask how this action affects the division’s overall goals. How will this movement affect your competition, your customers, and your compensation? How will the execution of this goal affect the company’s overall growth and profit margin? Ask for clarity when you need it rather than taking a chance and delivering work that is off the mark. Ill-prepared work will cost you time and embarrassment, frustrate your boss, and reflect badly on you.
