Chapter 21. Branding Yourself: The Art o... > Stay Abreast of Industry Trends, Ong...

Stay Abreast of Industry Trends, Ongoing Education, and Growing Contacts and Relationships Within Your Company and Industry

If you are working for a company that believes in developing its A players, take advantage of every possible training perk. Ask about extra training in your job interviews and volunteer for the course work whenever it is made available. Anything that you can learn, that is pertinent to your industry and to your growth, and that is paid for by someone else is an absolute no-brainer. It is a compliment to be included in training because it is expensive and your selection means that you, your service and your future potential for the company are valued.

I worked at a place that had an awesome and deep regard for training. We worked with a consultant to customize sales and marketing courses for our company-wide sales force. The training was held off-site and was one to three days in duration, once or twice a year, for two years. All sales employees were required to go and we were the only company among our major competitors who included this heavy training in the workload. I was amazed on two counts. First, many employees thought that the training was a real burden. The people in this company worked hard as a given and being taken away from their ongoing work felt like more work to some. Some people, who were very good at what they did and did not aspire beyond their level, felt the course work was actually needless. The second count was that our competition tried to use their lack of training as a perk to steal our (trained) people away!
