Tapping the Power of Natural Rewards

Two primary approaches to using natural rewards to enhance our self-leadership will be discussed here. These are (1) building more naturally enjoyable features into our life's activities, and (2) intentionally focusing our thoughts on the naturally rewarding aspects of our activities.

Building Natural Rewards into Our Life's Activities

The blizzard hit the forest with a tremendous force, leaving a deep layer of new-fallen snow. The beaver was in a bad mood as he struggled toward the river. The snow made it hard to move and he was very irritable as he trudged along. Then the beaver noticed the whistling of the otter who was playfully sliding and rolling over slopes on his way to the river. “Why are you whistling on this horrible day?” snapped the beaver, obviously irritated. “Why, it's a great day,” the otter sang out, “The best day I've had since yesterday—which was great, too.” The beaver sneered at this response and continued to complain as he trudged forward. The otter continued to playfully slide and roll along, whistling while he went. They both reached the river.
