We Do Choose

We as persons, our behavior, and the world in which we live are closely related. Each of these factors places important influences on the others.

For example, our behavior helps to determine what we will be faced with in our world. If our actions generally contribute to the well-being of those we come in contact with, positive forces for a more favorable, relevant world have been put into motion. By taking such actions we can help to ensure the personal security and happiness of others and also increase the likelihood of their being supportive of us. On the other hand, if our actions are strictly for our own benefit, at the cost of others, we may get what we want in the short run but in doing so create a hostile world in which we must live in the longer run. Ebenezer Scrooge creates for himself this sort of hostile world in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol.
