Several Autodesk products have export options with the AutoCAD renderer, including 3D Studio Max, 3D Viz, AutoCAD Architectural Desktop, Advanced Modeling Extension (AME), Autosurf, AutoCAD Designer, and of course Mechanical Desktop. Only the first two software products, 3D Studio Max and 3D Viz, require that you save you model into another format. AutoCAD has a built in feature for specifically importing and exporting AutoCAD drawing file to and from these products. These commands, called 3dsin and 3dsout, are available from two separate pull-down menus. To import a 3D Viz or Studio file, which have a .3DS extension, click on the Insert pull-down menu and select 3D Studio. To export a drawing to 3D Studio Max or Viz, select Export… from the File pull-down menu. Make certain that you change the file type in the Save as Type select list to 3D Studio(*.3DS) before saving your file. Both commands can also be activated from the command line by typing in the desired command name and pressing Enter.
