Chapter 16. Creating and Using Blocks > Attaching Attributes to Blocks

Attaching Attributes to Blocks

Attributes can be defined as informational data that is attached to blocks and then extracted to create reports, Bill of Materials, and schedules. Not only does this allow you to assign specific information about the individual blocks in a drawing, but you or others can also gather details about all the blocks in the entire drawing. Attribute values can be assigned as blocks are inserted into the drawing, or they can be predefined as constant values. When attributes are created, they are actually saved as part of the block. When blocks with attributes are inserted into a drawing, data is assigned to each block attribute (see Figure 16.10). This is done by first creating each individual attribute, then using the Block or Wblock command to combine these with the objects that make up the block.
