Once and Future LISP

Even within LISP, you can choose from a range of programming options. The LISP language was originally designed as a language for efficiently processing lists, such as series of numbers or text. AutoLISP is an adaptation of LISP for AutoCAD. The language easily handles (x, y, z) coordinate geometry and is well suited to programming in a CAD environment. This is still the quickest and easiest way to customize AutoCAD.

Visual LISP was developed as an enhancement to standard AutoLISP. It was introduced as an add-on product for AutoCAD Release 14 and is now included as part of the package with AutoCAD 2000. Visual LISP is a fully integrated development environment (IDE) for AutoLISP. This new environment includes all the capabilities of the original AutoLISP, in addition to a compiler, a debugger, and various productivity tools.
