A Brief Look at Visual LISP

With the release of AutoCAD 2000, Visual LISP became fully incorporated into AutoCAD. Visual LISP is a modern, updated implementation of AutoCAD’s AutoLISP programming interface. It should not be viewed as a replacement for AutoLISP, but rather as an extension of AutoLISP’s functionality with the addition of a fully integrated development environment (IDE) that makes it easier and faster for users to create, debug, and even package AutoLISP-based applications.

For AutoCAD users who already have a working—or even extensive—knowledge of AutoLISP, the introduction of Visual LISP will be virtually transparent. Not only are all the AutoLISP functions represented in Visual LISP, but also a significant number of new functions that extend the power of LISP within AutoCAD. Figure 22.7 shows the Visual LISP IDE with some of its functional windows.
