Part VIII: Advanced Topics > Customizing with DIESEL

Chapter 35. Customizing with DIESEL

DIESEL is an acronym for Direct Interpretively Evaluated String Expression Language. Like AutoLISP, DIESEL is an AutoCAD Application Programming Interface, or API. Unlike AutoLISP, which derives from and is a dialect of the larger, wellknown LISP language, DIESEL is unique to AutoCAD. Although DIESEL resembles AutoLISP in several important ways, it is not dependent upon AutoLISP for its operation. On the one hand, knowledge of AutoLISP certainly makes learning and using DIESEL easier. Similarly, having a working knowledge of DIESEL helps anyone wanting to learn AutoLISP.

In addition to the catalog of frequently used DIESEL functions that appears at the end of this chapter, the following topics are covered:

  • Understanding the mechanics of DIESEL

  • Learning DIESEL functions

  • Writing DIESEL expressions

  • Debugging DIESEL expressions

  • Using the MODEMACRO system variable

  • Using AutoLISP with DIESEL
