9.1. The Architectures

It's impossible to discuss the future of the MP3 scene without also touching on video issues. As available bandwidth and storage space increases, it's likely that users will increasingly begin to collect and swap movie clips and interactive presentations as readily as they do audio files today. RealPlayer G2, Windows Media, QuickTime 4.0, and MPEG-4 all represent complex, multifaceted presentation formats of which audio is but one component.

In the near future, users will be able to create and actually "participate" in interactive presentations that combine audio and video in ways we can only dream about today. For example, users might be able to download music videos that feature themselves as lead singer, pick up and carry objects through three-dimensional space, and enjoy it all through multi-channel home theatre systems.
